Howdy is the most efficient word in the language and I will die on this hill. It's a greeting, a nod, a whole disposition. You can say it to a stranger at the gas station and mean nothing by it and everything by it at the same time. Up north they think it's a costume. Out here it's just Tuesday. Big friendly wood-type, a rope swash underneath, and a word that does the work of a paragraph. Wear it somewhere they don't say it and watch who says it back. Those are your people now.
