Every animated show I loved as a kid ran on the same two energy sources, and I will not be taking criticism of either. One: friendship, deployed mid-battle, usually as a flashback montage right when things look lost. Two: exactly one more transformation the hero had been saving. I used to think it was a cliche. Then I got older and noticed that every hard thing I've actually survived came down to people who showed up for me, plus one reserve of stubbornness I didn't know I had. That's not a trope. That's a documentary with better hair. Final form pending.
